The fatigue strength of the hatch corners of bulk carriers has always been a concern. In this paper, a finite element model of a 174 000 dwt bulk carrier is established in Patran. The fatigue strength of the hatch corner of the No. 6 cabin at midship is evaluated according to the CCS Guidelines for Fatigue Strength of Hull Structures (2018). Two methods for optimizing the round hatch corners, i.e., the sub-model method and the global-model method, are designed based on the BP neural network and the MOPSO algorithm. Finally, the concept of life-to-weight ratio is proposed to evaluate various corners by comparing and analyzing the results of the two methods. A set of better corner structural forms are then obtained by analyzing the influence of the weight of the round corner on the fatigue life. It can provide references for other designers.
