This paper focuses on the new requirements of the world’s first 99 000 m 3 very-large ethane carrier (VLEC) for the prevention and control of the corona virus disease 2019(COVID-19). A design scheme for the epidemic prevention of the accommodation area is proposed to achieve the function transformation from usual use to epidemic time, according to the general arrangement requirements and characteristics of the ventilation system for the hospital and accommodation area, combined with the latest epidemic prevention and control(EPC) symbols of the classification societies and the epidemic prevention and control requirements of the medical institutions. Once the COVID-19 outbreak occurs on board, the hospital and the Suez Canal worker room can be quickly transformed into emergency temporary infectious disease wards. The layout of the infectious disease ward fulfills the principle of “three zones and two channels” in medical institutions, and the ward is equipped with the negative pressure isolation wards and regional ventilation and air conditioning systems. This design can prevent the spread of the virus to the greatest extent and ensure the health of the crew. This study can provide references for the anti-epidemic design of the accommodation area on-board.
